Go-Baby-Go!

  • Through exploration and play, toddlers and young children interact with their environment; mobility is crucial for independence, peer interaction, cognitive development and motor skill development. Unfortunately, due to children’s small size, financial limitations, and the availability of motorized wheelchairs, many families are unable to receive the assistive technology necessary for their child.

Go Baby Go is an organization that combats these issues by providing modified ride-on (Fisher Price Power Wheels) cars for young children with disabilities. These cars provide children with a fun, safe, and free way to develop independence.

With the help of Central Connecticut State University, Aquaculture students use engineering and problem-solving to help families in our local community. During the build sessions, students participate in assembling the cars, making electrical modifications, designing & constructing additional safety supports, and adding modifications/ details to personalize each child’s car. To complete these tasks, students work with hand and power tools in the woodshop under teacher supervision.

Once all cars are assembled and modified, a reveal event is held with all the families, Aqua student participants, CCSU helpers, and the physical/ occupational therapists. Together, the final modifications are made, the children test their new assistive technology, and families are sent home with their personalized cars.
