GRADE 8 READING/LANGUAGE ARTS
MRS SARMIENTO
2013/2014
COURSE REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURES/GRADING
Grading for Reading/Language Arts is divided into three categories: Participation, Reading Comprehension and Written Expression. In addition, number grades are given for Homework, Effort, and Conduct. Once work and tests are returned to my students they are entered into their Portfolios. These Portfolios are available for parents to review at their request.
TESTS:
All tests are given in essay format based on what is being read in class. These assignments are always announced at least 5 days ahead and are reviewed in class. I DO NOT GIVE QUIZES IN MY CLASS.
CLASSWORK AND PARTICIPATION :
Students are expected to participate in all areas of the classroom situation (group work, open class discussions, and class assignments). Students are expected to read independently and answer questions with regards to what they have read. Throughout the course of the year discussions revolve around real world connections to what the students are reading (connections from news, personal experiences, etc).
READING :
· The students are currently reading Copper Sun by Sharon Draper independently and we are also reading historical fiction short stories from the literature text. Compare and Contrast discussions will take place in class with regards to Setting as it affects Mood and Character Development.
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:
Essay writing is a major part of the middle school experience. The majority of our Reading tests will be in the form of essay questions. In addition, we will be working on Narrative and Expository writing in the second half of this year.
HOMEWORK:
Homework is assigned almost every night. Parents will be notified if the student is not doing his/her homework. Homework cannot be made up. If a student is absent the day a homework assignment is due he/she must show me the work when he/she comes back to school.
