(Page 8) Students in Grades K-8 are mandated by the Connecticut legislature to have no more than 20 unexcused absences in any school year. Students who exceed that number shall be referred to Juvenile Court as required by state law. In addition, parents of those students with more than 20 unexcused absences may be referred to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) for educational neglect. Students with more than 20 unexcused may not be considered for promotion. Refer to Promotion Policy 6300.
(Page 9) Tardiness: Students who come to school 45 minutes after the start of the school day will be required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian or the parent or guardian must telephone the school or provide a written note. If contact is not made with the parent, the student will be admitted to school but subject to disciplinary action by the administrator. Chronic tardy behavior must be referred to the Student Assistance Team.
(Page 11) The following benchmarks will be followed:
A. 04 unexcused absences in one month: phone call to parent and letter sent home.
B. 06 unexcused absences: 1st home Visit; 1st parent Conference.
C. 08 unexcused absences: phone call to parent, letter sent home.
D. 1O unexcused absences: parent conference, SAT referral, case manager assigned.
E. 12 unexcused absences: 2nd home visit; phone call home.
F. 15 unexcused absences: PPT referral indicating truancy concerns.
G. 16 to 19 unexcused absences: phone call home each day student is absent.
H. 20 unexcused absences: FSWN/Youth in Crisis/DCF referral filed.
