8th Grader Wins Annual PCM Scripps Spelling Bee!

Will Advance to State Finals March 9th, 9:30AM, at St. Joseph's University in West Hartford

Congratulations to PCM 8th Grader Sean from Mr. Johnson's homeroom.  After an intense, 2-day competition in Ms. Amezquita's ELA class, he and 9 other spelling guru's faced off today in the school finals.  After 7 rounds, Sean won the school finals by coolly spelling the word "m-e-d-i-c-i-n-a-l."

Sean says his love for spelling began in second grade.  He aced his first spelling test and earned all possible extra credit points.  After that, he was hooked.  When asked about what winning the Connecticut Spelling Bee would mean to him, Sean says "it would be an honor.  It would make my day and would be a loved and cherished memory throughout high school and college."

A huge thank you to all students who competed, and to Ms. Amezquita for making this awesome event possible.

"Man of La Mancha" Gets Rave Reviews from PCM Students

Thanks to our friends and donors at the Westport Country Playhouse, PCM's 7th & 8th Grade students attended the Playhouse's performance of "Man of La Mancha."  Students could be seen, and heard, booing, cheering, woo-ing and all around enjoying the performance!

"Man of La Mancha" is a tale of legendary author, poet and playwright Miguel de Cervanted, author of "Don Quixote."  He finds himself imprisoned and forced to defend himself in a mock court held by the prisoners.  As his defense, he stages a re-telling of his famous novel with he and his fellow inmates acting out the story.  Quixote, like Cervantes, finds himself a dreamer.  Our students were presented with some difficult questions.  In this sometimes brutal world in which Quixote, Cervantes, and we live, is it better to be a realist or an idealist?

"Man of La Mancha" is running at the Westport Country Playhouse through October 13th.

PCM Goes to the Dogs, and the Movies

Today 350 members of the Park City Magnet family took a trip to Bow Tie Theaters in Trumbull to see Connecticut's favorite hero, SGT Stubby!

    StubbyRealandAnimated

In 1917, SGT Stubby, a stray Bull-Terrier mix, wandered onto the training grounds of Connecticut's 102nd Infantry Regiment, Yankee Division, in New Haven as they prepared to enter World War One. He drilled with the soldiers and quickly became the regimental mascot.  Private J. Robert Conroy adopted him, and the men smuggled him to France.  There, the 102nd and Stubby saw some of the fiercest fighting of the war, and spent more days in battle than any other American unit.  Stubby's actions on the battlefield saved countless lives and his heroic antics have become legendary.  He was wounded twice and recieved several medals, and was even promoted to the rank of Sergeant!

For more about SGT Stubby, visit the official #StubbyMovie website, or SergeantStubbySalutes.org.

Our students had a great time, and are ready to share Stubby's story and the history they've learned about World War One.
